Aussie website sending messages to planet Gliese 581d: Hope it uses GSM.
For a week, visitors to www.HelloFromEarth.net can post messages to Gliese 581d, which is believed to be the nearest Earth-like planet. Should take 20 years for the SMSs to be received.
We have to assume that the big-eyed Gliesens have cellular networks and compatible handsets so they can read: "C U in da pub. L8ers."
The messages will be transmitted from the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, with the cooperation of NASA.
"It's like a 'message in a bottle' cast out into the stars. What's interesting is not just whether there's anyone listening, but what the public will say to intelligent life on another planet," said project spokesperson Wilson da Silva.
