Sony Ericsson has registered over one million requests to its TrackID song recognition service in less than three months.

Last year, the handset giant partnered with GraceNote to deliver song identification technology for its  W850 and W710 models, with other devices to follow. The TrackID  application can identify songs heard on the phones' built-in FM radio or from a nearby source, such as a car radio or a speaker. GraceNote claims a music database of 10 million songs.

While one million is a modest total, it is for just two handsets and it does indicate the nascent demand for a service which, with its impulse nature, is 'made for mobile'. Elsewhere, of course, Shazam and others are also active in the space.

The news is another boost for the Walkman brand. Just days ago Sony Ericsson confirmed around 17 million of its 74.8 million mobile phone sales in 2006 were Walkman branded.
