It may be ten years since the original premium rate text scams, but the con-artists haven't gone away.
Instead, they're trawling the mobile market for new opportunities. And it seems they've found rich pickings in Android Market.
Anti-virus expert Trend Micro has just uncovered a fake developer called Rovio Mobile, which uses a capital 'i' rather than a lower case 'l' in the word mobile.
This makes it impossible to distinguish between this lot and the firm that makes Angry Birds.
The fake Rovio lists games and screen shots from other existing apps, and once downloaded the app displays a modified screen instructing the user to click the link in order to complete the installation process.

But it ends up redirecting users to advertisements instead.
Clearly, this is not as serious as a premium rate dialler for example, but it does indicate the growing threat from cyber-criminals.
Indeed, this week ME spoke to an insider who believes virtually all operator billing in-app payments systems can be hacked to bypass the 'click to confirm' text.
