Samsung tops US phone market

Accounted for nearly a quarter of all devices in use in the three months to April.

comScore's MobiLens study surveyed more than 30,000 US subscribers and found Samsung to be the top dog.

What a result for the Koreans, consigning Motorola's reign to history and reminding us of Nokia's inability to every get anywhere stateside.

Samsung's compatriot LG was second with 20.9 per cent share, while Motorola clocked 15.6 per cent.

Apple has 8.3 per cent share, making it the fourth biggest OEM. Not bad when you have only one smartphone to sell. RIM is fifth with 8.2 per cent.

comScore found 234 million Americans aged 13 and older have a mobile, and 74.6 million have a smartphone – that's up 13 per cent from the three months to January 2011.

OS wise, Google Android had 36.4 per cent, iOS has 26.0 per cent, RIM 25.7 per cent, Microsoft 6.7 per cent and Palm 2.6 per cent.

Elsewhere, comScore found 68.8 per cent used text messaging, 39.1 per cent used their browsers and 37.8 per cent used a downloaded app.
