Samsung shifts 51.8m handsets in quarter

Samsung’s had a lamentable Q3, but at least its mobile results were good.

The Korean firm’s mobile unit shipped a record 51.8 million handsets during the quarter but profits slid seven percent. Despite the lower profits Samsung expects to continue growing market share through the rest of the year to around 17 per cent. It currently claims 14 per cent.

For the group as a whole operating profit for the period was 1.5 trillion won ($1 billion), down 38 per cent on 3Q2007, while sales slipped four per cent to 30.3 trillion won. The worst performing divisions were the semiconductor sector (thanks to sharp falls in flash memory prices, which Samsung manufactures), LCD panels and
digital media products.
