Samsung predicts mobile recovery

Display unit of electronics giant foresees its sector returning to growth next year, driven by touchscreens.

Samsung Display has told Reuters that it expects the mobile display market to return to 2008 levels in 2010, as demand for OLED technology and touchscreens for smartphones rises.

The mobile display market has contracted this year, but Samsung reckons it can recover to claim 25 per cent of the market this year and next year.

Specifically, the company says 1.75 billion display units will ship this year, down 7.9 per cent from 1.9 billion in 2008. Phones will account for just over 1 billion units in 2009, down from 1.2 billion in 2008.
