Samsung launches dedicated movie store

The 'Samsung Movies' store will launch with over 500 titles from the Hollywood majors.

Content such as The Dark Knight, RocknRolla and Iron Man will be available on phones, laptops and PC to buy or rent.

By the end of this month a further 500 titles will be added, followed by an additional 1,000 movies and TV shows by the end of June 2009.

There are also plans to expand this service to notebooks, mp3/mp4 players and Samsung TVs.

Samsung Movies start from £2.49 for 24-hour rental or from £4.99 to own.

The service, powered by digital movie specialist Acetrax, will be rolled out initially in the UK and Germany before being available in other key European markets later in 2009.

Samsung hopes the service will provide a showcase for its hi-res touchscreen devices. The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition, for example, features a 2.8 inch AMOLED screen.

Nick Turner-Samuels, head of content at Samsung Mobile UK, said: “We’re very excited to be able to provide customers access to their favourite movies and TV shows across a number of different Samsung platforms. On top of this, it’s all in superior picture and sound quality to the standard currently available in the market.”

Samsung is not the first to offer such a service. Motorola launched its own offering with Paramount last year.
