Samsung confirms next-gen Galaxy Tab

OEM's first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet features Face Unlock and AllShare.

The seven inch Galaxy Tab 2 is the first major upgrade to the range since the first device in 2010.

It is not a radical update in hardware terms, with 1GHz dual core processor, three-megapixel rear-facing camera, Bluetooth capabilities and HSPA+ connectivity.

So it's really all about software. The new Tab offers the various Samsung Hub range (Music, Reader and Games), and now includes the new Video Hub, which offers over 1,000 film titles for purchase or rent.

It's all accessible via an upgraded Touchwiz user interface while a new service, S Suggest, offers real-time recommendations of apps suited to customers’ tastes directly on the home screen.

But the two most eye catching additions are probably Face Unlock and All Share.

The former uses image recognition to unlock the device, and thereby discourages radical facial surgery in Galaxy fans.

Meanwhile AllShare Play lets users play or live-stream their multimedia content on with other Samsung smart devices as well as third-party web storage units.

Galaxy Tab 2 is coming to UK first in March. No prices yet.
