Samsung buys music and video specialist mSpot

Laying the ground for Samsung-branded cloud-based entertainment services.

mSpot is one of the industry's longest established streaming music and video firms. It was around in the first wave of mobile entertainment and still powers white-label solutions to AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

It also has own brand services available in the Android Marketplace or App Store

This acquisition will prepare Samsung to go head to head against Apple and Google in providing cloud based streaming service to its increasingly large audience of Android (and possibly bada) handsets.

Presumably these will sit alongside its existing Hub download stores.

"mSpot shares our vision to bring a best-in-class cloud and streaming entertainment experience to consumers, and they've backed it up with innovative technical solutions from a great engineering team," said TJ Kang, SVP of Samsung Electronics' Media Solution Center.

The deal was rumoured to cost around $9m.

Samsung sold 40m smartphones in Q1, and has sold 20m Galaxy SII devices. Its SIII was unveiled last week, and - intriguingly - offers 50MB of free Dropbox storage with each purchase.
