Idea is to help operators give users rich media via the SIM.
The initiative, called MaXSSIMM (or ‘My Secure Solution for Mobile Multimedia Internet’), is being led by SIM maker Gemalto.
It involves the development of multimedia SIM cards, feature phones (initially Android) and operator servers that improve the data portability between devices. This enables the customisation of handsets with operator-specific features and services.
With this new announcement, Sagem Wireless will develop prototype devices, while software maker Myriad will lead the integration of the devices with new operator services. These service could also be accessible via TV set-top box, hi-fi, car radio and so on.
The high capacity of the multimedia SIM card has a security upside too, meaning that users who lose their handset don't lose their personal data.
The €35 million project is due to be completed in June 2010.
