Saffron Digital confirmed as Sony Ericsson movie partner

UK platform specialist will power handset firm's PlayNow Arena Movies service.

Sony Ericsson's intiative, a kind of 'comes with movies' idea, gives buyers of certain handsets the right to download a limited number of 'free' movies a year. It was announced earlier this week.

Now, Saffron has been revealed at the technology specialist behind the service. The firm has form in this area, working with T-Mobile, Paramount, Motorola and others on video offerings.

It will look after content management, video encoding, website hosting, file delivery and digital rights management.

Shashi Fernando, CEO of Saffron Digital, said: “This is an extremely compelling proposition and hopefully a step change in the way that handset manufacturers and media companies are planning video delivery in this industry. With our proven track record of working with companies on this sort of scale, we know we can deliver an unbeatable package.”
