Rovio launches its own in-app payment service for Angry Birds

Bad Piggy Bank will use carrier billing, initially in Finland.

Rovio Mobile has announced that it plans to launch its own in-app payments system for Angry Birds, called Bad Piggy Bank.

The service will use carrier billing to allow users to pay for in-app purchases, such as its upcoming Mighty Eagle power-up.

It's intended to be used on smartphone platforms without a decent IAP system, but relies on Rovio signing direct deals with the operators.

The company is starting in its native Finland, through a deal with operator Elisa. Customers with the free ad-supported version of Angry Birds will be able to pay to remove the ads.

Rovio will then launch with other carriers worldwide next year. ME asked Rovio's Peter Vesterbacka how the system works in terms of billing partnerships.

"The plan is to work with several third party payment providers - the first one is Fortumo," he says.

"We will be signing up carriers one by one in any case as we are also introducing a more developer-friendly revenue share as part of the Bad Piggy Bank roll-out."
