Finnish mobile games developer to embrace Flash for its next original IP release.

Rovio has confirmed that its next piece of original IP will be released as a Flash game on the internet this quarter, before a 3Q 2008 debut as a Java title.

The hope is that if the Flash version of puzzler Totomi is a success on the myriad casual gaming sites out there it will create a marketing story to help Rovio secure on-deck distribution of the Java game with operators.

Rovio feels the time is right to strike out once again with its own IP, having made a mark two years ago with survival horror mobile games like The Darkest Fear.

In the last 12 months the Finland-based studio has solidified its reputation with some high-profile work for third party publishers, including N-Gage game Bounce for Nokia Publishing, Burnout for EA Mobile, Paper Planes for Namco Bandai Networks Europe and Burger Rush for Mr. Goodliving/RealArcade.

Rovio CEO Johan Annamatz said: “Creating casual games that work across multiple platforms is a great route to market for smaller publishers and developers. If you can attract a million users to a Flash game, there’s an excellent opportunity to translate that success to the mobile arena.”
