Rolling Stones get augmented reality campaign on Layar

Exile on Main Street virtual posters appearing on lots of streets.

Mobile augmented reality app Layar has got its most high-profile layer yet: a marketing campaign for the re-released Exile on Main Street album by the Rolling Stones.

Layar users can get the 'Exile on Your Street' layer for free, and use it to stick virtual posters promoting the album on real-world locations.

They can also set a message, and attach a clip from one of the album's songs.

It's an official campaign from Polydor Records, working with AR developer Augment Reality. It's the startup behind the Beatles tourist layer that made headlines last year.

Exile on Your Street is just one of more than 1,000 publisher Layar layers. Last week, the company announced it now has an active user base of more than 716,000 people, and 4,000 developers creating content.

In separate Stones/Mobile news, Activision has just added a Rolling Stones song pack to the iPhone version of its Guitar Hero game.

Players can now tap along to Gimme Shelter, Satisfaction and Honky Tonk Women. The pack costs $1.99 from the in-game store.
