Marketing ploy to raise profile of iPhone game sequel falls flat.

Removing popular game Rolando from the App Store to increase the impact of its sequel made lots of people really grumpy, it seems.

Fortunately for them Ngmoco took heed of the response from fans, who reacted with typical internet-fuelled incredulity when the game vanished from Apple’s digital portal.

It's certainly a lesson in how not to market mobile games.

“We did not intend to deprive you of the ability to re-download or update our games,” the firm said in a statement.

“Rather, we had wanted to learn how well Rolando 2 would do at launch without the competition generated by its predecessor.

“The App Store is an entirely new animal, and we're always learning what it takes to deliver what you want.”

Rolando 2 will be released on the App Store tomorrow. The first game is, despite its distinctly more than passing similarities to Sony Japan’s PSP and PS3 hit LocoRoco, widely regarded as one of the very best titles available on Apple’s platform.
