Ringtone symphony to make debut

Ringtone symphony to make debut

Can you turn your orchestra to vibrate please?

The project, called ‘Mobile Sinfonia’, is the work of musician and programmer Jem Finer, and will open at the Bath Digital Festival on Thursday March 15th.

It's a new musical composition scored for ringtones and an open, worldwide orchestra of mobile phone users.

It all sounds very confusing and avant garde. Here's now the official statement describes it:

"Each Mobile Sinfonia ringtone is a ‘voice’ in the composition. Together they make a global orchestra of electronic instruments. The piece emerges through the occurrences and coincidental interactions of these sounds. The more people join in, the richer and more wide-spread the composition becomes."

Does that make any sense?

The artistic thrust of the project may be evident from a previous experiment by Finer called ‘Longplayer’ – a 1000 year long musical composition, which began playing at midnight on December 31st 1999, and will continue to play will 2999, at which point it will complete its cycle and begin again.

Exactly.
