RIM: 'We want developers to differentiate their apps on BlackBerry'

But it also wants them to look beyond AdMob for their advertising.

Research In Motion doesn't want developers to simply port their iPhone apps to BlackBerry: it wants them to add unique features to become 'Super Apps', according to director of developer relations Mike Kirkup.

"It’s about this rich, seamless and integrated app experience - you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, just leverage the platform," he told ME at Mobile World Congress.

"We want developers to start differentiating their apps on BlackBerry. It’s not for selfish reasons: they can be more successful selling those apps on BlackBerry than on other platforms if they get a user experience that you can’t live without."

Kirkup also talked about RIM's plans for mobile advertising, which differ from Apple and Google's in that it will aggregate various ad networks for its developers, rather than bring ads in-house by buying a network of its own.

"We’re not trying to be the advertising giant: we’re working with all the different advertising companies in the world to mobilise their ads and get them in apps," he said.

"AdMob is a US-based company, and it’s very good at serving ads in the US, but has no clue how to serve up an ad in a Spanish context. But we can find an advertising provider in Spain that has that capability to fill into the app of a developer in the US or UK, for example."
