"Rumors suggesting that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued are pure fiction.”
Poor sales of device have caused web gossip to spread suggesting that RIM is ready to ditch its tablet.
The culprit setting the web alight with the news was John Vihn, Collins Stewart semiconductor analyst, who said: "We believe RIM has stopped production of its PlayBook and is actively considering exiting the tablet market.
But now the BlackBerry creator has spoken out to call the rumours "pure fiction".
In an emailed statement, Marisa Conway, RIM spokeswoman, said: "Rumors suggesting that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued are pure fiction. RIM remains highly committed to the tablet market and the future of QNX in its platform."
"Additionally, our due diligence indicates that RIM has canceled development of additional tablet projects."

If RIM was to bow out with the PlayBook and call it a day, it wouldn't be the first tablet maker to do so. HP abandoned its TouchPad in August after seven weeks on sale.
PlayBook currently uses the QNX OS and RIM intends to launch 'superphones' in 2012 adding QNX software to new mobile phones, replacing the current software, which has been widely criticised in comparison to iOS and Android.
