Another big-time acquisition hits the social gaming space.
RIM just announced on its developer blog that it has bagged Scoreloop in order to help developers create “social app experiences” through the BBM Social Platform.
After ngmoco and OpenFeint were purchased recently by DNA and Gree respectively, most insiders expected a deal for Scoreloop to follow.
But few would have guessed RIM. However, it indicates just how desperate the BlackBerry maker is to expand its platform beyond email and IM in the eyes of users, and make its apps more social.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Germany-based Scoreloop, which was founded in 2008, operates a cross-platform social gaming developer tool kit, which works across all the major smarthphone platforms.

Its SDK lets games developers add social elements into their content, while also incorporating in-app purchases and virtual currency.
It's the sort of stuff that Apple might have cannibalised with Game Center. In practice, there seems to be room for everyone.
Question now is whether Scoreloop will abandon non-RIM platforms. The firm says not.
“We’ll continue our cross-platform approach,” said Marc Gumpinger, Scoreloop’s CEO on his site. “But you’ll see that our BlackBerry solution will be unparalleled.”
