RIM buys NewBay for $100m

Swoops for Irish company to prepare itself for cloud-based services.

The news was first revealed in the Irish Times, which said that RIM will keep NewBay’s software development centre in Dublin, which employs about 200 staff.

NewBay was founded in 2002 and was an early entrant into the mobile locker space, building back-up services in which users could store music and photos and grabbing customers like  T-Mobile USA, Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica O2, France Telecom Orange, US Cellular, ATT, Telstra and Verizon.

More latterly, of course, these back-up services have evolved into something a little more significant as the cloud has emerged as a domain for hosting services, not just backing up content.

NewBay's core platform is called LifeCache, and firm claims it is used by 80 million subscribers worldwide.

The acquisition is another aggressive move by RIM, which has also purchased Scoreloop, Tungle, Jaycut and others in the past 12 months.

With Apple preparing a major launch with iCloud and Google slowly rolling out its cloud-based music services, RIM is clearly keen to secure a platform that can help it compete in the space.
