RIM buys BlackBerry app-maker Viigo

Planning more big things in 'real-time content delivery'.

Research In Motion has acquired Viigo, the company behind the popular BlackBerry application of the same name.

Viigo confirmed the deal on its website in a statement, saying that "our team has joined RIM’s global organization and will continue to bring our expertise in BlackBerry application development and real-time content delivery to the BlackBerry platform".

Viigo is sometimes described as an RSS app, but it's about more than that. It delivers news, weather, stock prices, sports scores and other web info to users, tying into the BlackBerry OS.

The app will remain available on RIM's BlackBerry App World store, but it will be fascinating to see what Viigo is up to once assimilated into the handset maker.

RIM has developed a number of its own apps, including its about-to-be-released Twitter client, and an app for U2.

We can only assume Viigo may be working on one or more new 'Super Apps' for RIM, or possibly on integrating the Viigo app into the BlackBerry OS.
