Research shows Android momentum still growing

AdMob stats and Changewave survey provide new year cheer for Google.

The latest stats from mobile advertising firm AdMob show continued growth for Google's Android smartphone OS.

According to the company, it totalled more than one billion ad requests from Android handsets in December - up 97% from October's figure.

56% of those December requests came from HTC phones, with 39% from Motorola devices and 5% from Samsung. HTC accounted for 98% of requests in October, so you can see the impact of Moto's Droid handset.

However, AdMob's stats reveal that Android is still biggest in the US, which accounted for 90% of AdMob's Android traffic in December - up from 84% in October.

It's probably a good thing that AdMob's Android business is growing, given that the company is in the process of being acquired by Google.

More evidence of Android's momentum is provided by a survey of US consumers by ChangeWave, conducted in December.

It found that 4% of respondents who owned a smartphone had an Android handset - up from 1% in September - while 21% of those planning to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days said they'd like an Android handset - up from 6% in September.

That makes it the second most desired smartphone OS behind iPhone (which scored 28%) - having overtaken BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Palm's webOS in the past three months.
