Reports: MySpace laying off half its staff

Company restructure continues, although apps remain a big focus.

MySpace will lay off around half of its employees today, according to separate reports by the Financial Times and All Things Digital.

Anywhere between 500 and 600 of the company's 1,000-odd staff are expected to receive their marching orders, with international offices particularly affected.

The cuts come as MySpace continues to refocus its business away from being a pure social network, and towards being a 'social entertainment' service that helps people discover music, video and games.

One area expected to survive the cuts is the company's mobile business.

Last month at the LeWeb conference, CEO Mike Jones (pictured) claimed that "a third of MySpace's daily audience interact with MySpace via mobiles".

Jones said that MySpace is launching a "mobile application network" focused around entertainment.
