Report: Twitter founder behind new iPhone payments system

Plug in a dongle and pay for goods and services.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has a new project focused on iPhone payments, claims tech blog Mashable.

It's apparently called the Square iPhone Payment System, and will be launched by Dorsey's new company, Self Edge NYC.

The service involves plugging a square white dongle into an iPhone or iPod touch, which can be used to read credit cards and transfer funds to the related app. Touchscreen signature scribbling is also involved.

It's certainly an interesting idea, offering a new touchscreen twist on the kinds of mobile payment systems that have been around for years, particularly in Japan.

However, there are plenty of questions to be answered in order for the Square iPhone Payment System to be a success. Such as why focus just on iPhone rather than other handsets? Wouldn't it have more chance if Apple built it into the devices? And how many retailers will sign up, and how fast?
