Report claims Qualcomm working on FLO TV handheld TV device

Mobile televisions belong to a bygone era, right? Perhaps not for long if Qualcomm has its way...

Qualcomm's next cunning plan to promote its FLO TV mobile TV service is to design its own handheld personal television. At least, so says US tech blog Gdgt.

It suggests that the FLO TV Personal Television will be able to receive broadcasts on Qualcom's FLO TV digital TV service.

What's more, the article has a concept drawing which it claims was produced for Qualcomm by agency Frog Design, and goes on to give some specs: capacitive touchscreen, 4GB of memory, built-in stereo speakers and battery life for five hours of viewing.

The problem with this rumour is that Qualcomm isn't a consumer electronics company - at least not in the sense that it likes to sell its own branded products.

However, it has made a habit of developing prototype gadgets to show what its chipsets are capable of.

We wonder if the FLO TV Personal Television could be one of those - not necessarily destined for a commercial release, but more to nudge consumer-facing tech firms to make similar models.

All will be revealed in the coming months, presumably: CTIA in October and CES in January would be logical launch events for such a device, whether it's a prototype or not.
