Report: 500m will use mobile transport ticketing by 2015

NFC to take contactless tech outside Japanese heartland.

A report by Juniper Research says the 500m rate is over five times the number generated last year.

At present mobile ticketing is used widely in Japan and to a lesser extent Stockholm and Prague. In other markets, the use of mobile in the transport sector is less for payments than for ticketing via barcodes and SMS.

However, Juniper believes the arrival of NFC in smartphones will propel the market in developed regions from 2013.

Report author Howard Wilcox said: "Whether by expansion of SMS and bar code delivery or by NFC, at Juniper we see convenience and choice for users as key advantages of mobile ticketing.

"It will be 2013 before large numbers of NFC enabled devices are in peoples’ pockets and our new report forecasts the impact on transaction volumes. "
