Report: $1 trillion of mobile service revenues in 2013

Informa Telecoms & Media reckons data revenues will be a big chunk of that.

The mobile industry will generate more than $1 trillion of mobile services revenues globally in 2013, according to a new report from Informa Telecoms & Media.

The analyst firm predicts that data revenues will account for more than $330 million of that, helping to make up for a fall in voice revenues.

"The growth in data revenues is being spurred by the rise in take-up of more advanced technologies and mobile broadband services, as well as new handset interfaces and mobile content strategies based on application stores rather than walled gardens," says chief research officer Mark Newman.

The report also digs into some of the key global markets, predicting that in 2014, mobile data revenues will actually overtake voice revenues in Japan, thanks to the rollout of next-gen LTE networks.

Informa thinks that in 2014, Japanese mobile data revenues will top $39.7 billion. Meanwhile, by the end of that year, the report also predicts that more than half of the world's 6.7 billion mobile subscriptions will be 3G and 3.5G+, with a third of them being the latter.

We'll make our own prediction: in 2014 when you go into a Carphone Warehouse, the salesperson won't be mentioning "3.5G+". At least we hope not.
