Registered BlackBerry developers doubled in 2009

More than 200,000 now signed up, following global growth.

Research In Motion's developer relations boss Mike Kirkup claims that the company has doubled its BlackBerry developer community in 2009.

In a blog post, he says that there are now more than 200,000 registered BlackBerry developers, with "substantial international growth" this year fuelling the growth. Of course, the launch of RIM's BlackBerry App World store helped too.

Kirkup also outlines some of RIM's key achievements this year in supporting developers, including its Developer Issue Tracker, the BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge contest, and its revamped Developer Zone website.

"We have been working really hard to make it easier to be a BlackBerry developer from services to simulators and everything in between," writes Kirkup.

One of the big themes in mobile entertainment in 2010 will be the efforts by the various smartphone platform owners to court developers and flag up the merits of their platforms and developer support.
