RealNetworks updates Helix Media Delivery Platform

Promises to help operators boost mobile TV quality and test new business models.

RealNetworks has unveiled the new version of its Helix Media Delivery Platform, which helps operators and broadcasters launch mobile TV services.

It includes new monitoring and control features for live and on-demand video to provide operators with more data on how it's being watched on their networks.

The new Helix also offers something called 'live rate adaptation', helping operators to deliver consistent video quality to their mobile TV viewers, against fluctuating bandwidth and demand.

Another new feature is Play-list creation, which means operators will be able to let their users create custom mobile TV channels, potentially blending clips and items from different shows.

Advertising is also supported, allowing operators to insert ads into their mobile TV streams, and thus test ad-supported pricing models as well as the traditional subscription formats.
