RealNetworks unveils Unifi cloud storage service

Will let people store photos, videos and music in the cloud and access them from multiple devices.

RealNetworks is the latest big tech firm to unveil an ambitious cloud service: Unifi.

It's described as a 'personal media' service, which lets users store their photos, videos and music on Real's servers, then access them from multiple devices.

Unifi is due to launch in the first quarter of 2011 according to the New York Times, with support for PCs, iPhones and Android smartphones. BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 will follow in Q2.

RealNetworks CEO Robert Kimball announced the new service in an appearance at yesterday's D: Dive Into Mobile conference in San Francisco.

Unifi will be free in a basic version, but users will pay for extra storage space for their content.

These kinds of digital lockers are a controversial subject for some content owners, particularly the music industry, due to the belief of labels that much of the music being stored in these lockers may have originally been pirated.

Major label EMI is suing locker service MP3tunes, in a case that is expected to set an important precedent for whether cloud storage services have to pay licensing fees to rightsowners.

RealNetworks is seemingly confident enough about the outcome to forge ahead with its plans for Unifi.
