Quiet launch for Kindle book sharing

Quiet launch for Kindle book sharing

Shush in the library.

After its bumper holiday period, Amazon has discreetly launched a lending feature that lets users share a book once for two weeks.

This is not a free for all on sharing as the original owner's access to the book is temporarily revoked.

But it is a loosening of the tight DRM that applies to Kindle books. The feature works on both the Kindle reader and all apps.

Not all publishers are supportive, with reports suggesting some Avon, Hachette, Harlequin and Penguin titles aren't available to borrow.

Interesting move though. And one wonders whether ebooks might go the way of music and end up abandoning DRM and trusting honest consumers instead.
