QuickPlay: Mobile video on the up

Video streaming to mobile grew 118 per cent in the month to 4Q 2008, says QuickPlay Media.

The TV and video specialist's latest quarterly consumer consumption analysis, which aggregates statistics from 15 of its live services, showed encouraging results for the space.
Quickplay attributed the rise to popular new launches like the YouTube content on Telus Mobility.

It said TV and video streams grew 118 per cent from Q3 to Q4 2008, compared with a 27 per cent increase from Q2 to Q3.

However, streams per user dropped slightly to 17.4 in Q4 from 19.3 in Q3. Meanwhile average downloads per user went from 4.1 per in Q3 to six in Q4. Total video downloads showed an increase of 73 per cent for the month.

“The positive results show mobile entertainment continues to be one of the bright spots in the current economy,” said Wayne Purboo, CEO of QuickPlay Media.

“Consumers remain willing to pay for high-quality entertainment services.  In 2009, we expect to see mobile operators continuing to focus on mobile data services as it gives them an effective way to protect ARPU by delivering added value to their cost-conscious subscribers."
