Engineers tasked with collaborating on Linux, Webkit, Symbian, Android and Chrome initiatives
Qualcomm has established a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, Qualcomm Innovation Center (QuIC), to focus on mobile open source platform development.
The move fits in with the company's ongoing efforts to be seen as a more active participant in the 'open' tech field, having built much of its mobile internet business on semi-proprietary platforms.
Qualcomm says QuIC will bring together a group of engineers to optimize open source software with its own technology, with Rob Chandhok, senior vice president of software strategy for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies named as the new unit's president.
In fact, Chandhok will address the Symbian open source community in London on October 28th at the Symbian Exchange and Exposition - he'll be discussing his vision for 'a better open', which includes leveraging the attributes of advanced mobile devices and optimization via tight hardware integration.
