Purchase will enable chip giant to add gesture recognition tech to its Snapdragon processor.
GestureTek is a patent-holder in camera-enabled gesture-recognition technology. This lets people control devices or play games simply by moving their hands or body.
It's the sort of tech made popular by EyeToy and Kinect, and Gesturetek's patents have been licensed by Microsoft, Sony, NTT DoCoMo and others.
With this bit of M&A, Qualcomm is buying IP and engineering resources, while GestureTek is retaining other assets that will enable it to focus on its gesture-controlled public display and digital signage business.
By embedding the tech into Snapdragon, Qualcomm should give OEMs the capability to produce phones and tablets with the ability to 'read' gestures.
