PresseLite launches Paris augmented reality app for iPhone

But hang on, we thought AR apps weren't allowed yet...

French firm PressLite has updated its Paris Metro Subway iPhone app with new augmented reality (AR) features, showing information about Parisian businesses when users look through their iPhone's camera at their surroundings.

It's only available for the iPhone 3GS, due to its use of the handset's compass feature to determine what direction the device is being pointed in.

As ReadWriteWeb explains, the fact that the app is available at all is something of a surprise: it's been widely suggested that Apple is not allowing AR apps to be sold in the App Store until later this Autumn, when it releases its next iPhone software update.

The Paris Metro Subway update could show that this isn't the case, opening the floodgates for the many other iPhone AR apps that have been shown off in recent months, but not yet launched on the App Store.

Alternatively, PressLite's application may have fallen through the cracks in Apple's approvals process - in which case, it may not last long on the App Store. It's an innovative app, so we hope the first option is the case.
