Portable media player market to slow

New research says market will slow in 2009 - good news for mobile?

Short product life cycles, increased market maturity and unmet demand for content are among the problems facing manufacturers of portable entertainment devices, says Digitimes.

The Taiwan-based market research outfit says the market - which includes digital cameras, MP3 players and portable media players (PMPs) - will grow by 12.6 per cent to 500 million units in 2008, but then see growth slow to 5.5 per cent in 2009.

Digitimes said the market - which excludes mobile handsets, notebooks, PDAs, GPS devices, and FM radios - will grow by 16 per cent this year.

Significantly, report author Joanne Chien said: "Video functionality alone can rarely motivate consumers to purchase such products as PMPs or portable DVD players. Video functionality is likely to serve as an added-value features of other applications, such as portable game consoles."
