PlayStation Phone rumours return... with added Android 3.0

Tech blog claims Sony Ericsson's next Xperia smartphone will have a gaming focus.

Sony Ericsson is planning to launch an Android-powered gaming smartphone which may carry PlayStation branding, according to a report on tech blog Engadget.

Citing a 'trusted source', the report claims that the device could be revealed as early as this October, running the as-yet unreleased Android 3.0 operating system.

The touchscreen handset apparently has a slide-out joypad section with physical butons and a touchpad, and may be powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

Engadget also claims that Google is in on the action too, with plans to set aside a section of its Android Market store for the PSP-quality games that will be released for the phone - and possibly other Android handsets.

Sony Ericsson making a PlayStation Phone is a rumour that's as old as the hills, and one that hs never previously come to fruition.

However, Sony's PlayStation division has shown a bigger interest in mobile gaming in recent times, licensing out titles like Buzz and God of War for mobile release.

Needless to say, if the latest rumour is correct, it will be a mighty feather in Google's cap at a time when it's ramping up its gaming efforts in the online world, via an investment in Zynga and the acquisition of Slide.
