Next to iPhone Nano it was the other rumour that wouldn't die. It has now though. Maybe.

Sony has refused to grant its Sony Ericsson joint venture permission to use its PlayStation branding on phones, according to a report in Mobile Today.

The decision was apparently made in December following a series of pitches on the grounds that the troubled handset maker couldn't guarantee a good enough user experience.

Sony Ericsson has already used Sony's Walkman, Cyber-shot and Bravia badges on its phones.

Of course, Sony could be holding back to produce a PlayStation or PSP phone on its own, having seen devices like the iPhone and iPod touch eclipse much of the functionality of its existing PSP handheld.

Earlier this week reports circled that Apple was prepping a June launch for an iPhone Nano.
