Player X inks Orange apps deal

UK operator takes Zed subsidiary's entertainment, tools and lifestyle content.

Player X has expanded its aggregation services to include mobile applications, with Orange UK its first operator partner.

Under the terms of the deal Player X will aggregate casual entertainment content, practical tools and lifestyle applications, including as Lie Detector, Mobile Detox, Crossword Expert and Cocktail Mixer.

Player X says its existing portal and storefront services like 100% Mobile (which is used by O2 and Telefonica) mean it's well placed to tap into app demand. The company says it is in the process of assembling a network of app developers for its new services.

Player X was acquired by Spain's Zed last month as the latter looks to move deeper into the managed services space.

Player X CEO Tony Pearce said: "Thanks largely to the explosion of smart phones there is a hungry demand for apps in the market and Player X is the ideal partner to deliver first class aggregation services with our distribution and retail strengths.”

Neil Holroyd, Head of Gaming and Application Services, Orange UK, said: “Applications is a key area for Orange UK that is already showing strong growth. We are very excited about its potential”.
