Plan hatched for 'New Nokia'

Former exec pitches in with some constructive criticism

The author of a book called New Nokia - The Manuscript (or Uusi Nokia, in the original Finnish) has been talking to The Register.

Juhani Risku wrote the book from a sympathetic angle, suggesting ways in which the company can rectify its current position of playing catch-up with the opposition.

In short, the message is 'don't panic'. In Risku's own words Nokia is still “one of the best companies anywhere on Earth”.

A wholesale dispatching of the company's home-grown leadership for replacement by American imports, as has been suggested in some quarters, isn't what's required, argues Risku.

What is required is for Nokia to re-disover the knack of innovation, and to do that it will need to slash obstructive bureaucracy and rid itself of 300 - 500 SVPs, VPs and directors.

Right at the very top, Risku proposes a dual leadership. One half of it should be a Steve Jobs-type innovator steeped in Nokia and Finnish culture.

Risku also spends time analysing the performance of individual members of the Nokia hierarchy, with some coming in for more criticism than others.
