PhonepayPlus comfirms new code of practice

Built around 'consumer outcomes', such as pricing transparency, good customer service and respecting consumers’ privacy.

The UK regulator of premium rate phone services says it will now, for the first time, regulate every part of the value chain.

It says it wants to ensure that all providers share responsibility, so that it can better target that minority of unscrupulous providers.

PPP says it is allowing providers flexibility in how they comply with the code, so that they can adapt their services to include social networking and smartphone apps without a load of extra hassle.

PhonepayPlus’ CEO Paul Whiteing said: “As the market for PRS and other micropayments expands, our new Code of Practice, with its clear focus on what matters to consumers, will be flexible enough to deal with innovations in the digital and micropayment worlds as they happen.

"We are proud of the new Code of Practice and look forward to working with the PRS industry to build and sustain consumer confidence in these exciting new markets.”

The new code will come into effect on September 1st.
