24% of American adults using apps.

Pew Internet has hailed a growing apps culture in the US, publishing research that claims 24% of US adults are using apps on their phones.

In fact, the survey finds that 35% of US adults have apps on their handsets, but a chunk of those people aren't using them.

Among mobile users specifically, 29% have downloaded apps to their phones, while 13% have paid for apps.

The research was conducted with Nielsen, based on a telephone survey of 2,252 adults.

"An apps culture is clearly emerging among some cell phone users, particularly men and young adults,” says Kristen Purcell, associate director for research at the Pew Internet Project.

"Still, it is clear that this is the early stage of adoption when many cell owners do not know what their phone can do. The apps market seems somewhat ahead of a majority of adult cell phone users."

The report is well worth digging into. Here's some more stats:

- 10% of adult mobile users have downloaded an app in the last week, but that rises to 20% for people under 30.

- People with apps have a mean average of 18 apps on their phones, although the median number is 10 - Pew says this indicates "heavy apps users on the high end of the response scale who have a disproportionate number of apps on their phones".

- 11% of mobile users aren't even sure if their phone has apps or not.
