PayPal Here is a triangular add-on that plugs into the headphone jack of a smartphone or tablet. Merchants can then accept payments by swiping cards or using the camera to scan them.
PayPal launched the accessory last month largely as a response to companies like Square, which are disrupting the card payments space by offering retailers the ability to use phones as tablets in place of expensive POS readers.
So far take-up has been encouraging. John Donahoe, CEO of eBay (which owns PayPal) said more than 200,000 merchants have signed up ahead of a launch to the public in the second quarter in the US, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia.
More than one million merchants currently use Square.
