Pandora launches Android music app

Streaming application continues its push onto every smartphone platform.

US streaming music firm Pandora has launched its Android application, following in the footsteps of existing versions for iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Palm Pre.

Besides allowing users to listen to personalised radio stations from Pandora's web service, the app is also well integrated with the Android platform, according to CTO Tom Conrad.

"You can control playback from a home screen widget, 'deep tap' any artist or song in the standard Android music player and jump into Pandora to discover other similar artists, make a smart folder to get quick access to your stations from the home screen, buy tracks you discover from the Amazon MP3 application, use your Android address book to share stations with your friends, and of course listen in the background while you're doing other things on the phone," he blogs.

It's available today for the myTouch and G1 handsets, and from next month will work with the HTC Hero too. However, due to Pandora's licensing restrictions, the app will only be available to users in the US.

Besides being good news for Pandora users with Android handsets, the app shows an increasing trend for mobile music apps to be, well, a bit better on Android than they are on iPhone.

Spotify's Android app can also run in the background, unlike its iPhone version, but Pandora's new app shows the degree to which music applications can tie into Android even more tightly.
