Palm Pre gets paid apps (but still no iTunes)

Latest version of webOS also supports over-the-air music downloads.

Palm has released the latest version of its webOS software for the Palm Pre smartphone, with paid applications the big feature.

Until now, developers have only been able to offer their apps for free in the Palm App Catalog store, but Palm has now launched its billing feature, allowing users to pay by credit card.

The move may mean there are some paid apps for UK users to buy when the Pre goes on sale here on 16th October.

Users can also reinstall apps that they have previously purchased for free - a feature that Nokia is also in the process of introducing to its Ovi Store, incidentally.

Another new webOS feature is the ability to download songs over-the-air from Amazon's MP3 store, rather than forcing users to do it over Wi-Fi connections.

However, there is also bad news for Pre users on the music front: Palm has yet to reintroduce the feature that allows them to sync their phone with their iTunes desktop music library.

Initially flagged as a major selling point for the Pre, it has since been broken by Apple, recreated by Palm, and subsequently broken again by Apple.
