That's three quarters of all handsets sold.
Research firm Strategy Analytics said shipments are predicted to reach 1.14 billion units, and that those with 8 megapixels and higher are expected to increase 240 per cent this year.
It expects these sales will drive additional usage of advanced services like augmented reality.
But it also warns that extra imaging capabilities could increase data traffic without necessarily raising revenues.
About a quarter of phones still don’t have cameras because of the large volume of low-cost basic phones sold in Africa, Asia and other emerging markets.
