Over 2m train enquiries via iPhone thetrainline app

Free travel app hits milestone in one month.

thetrainline.com launched its app in October last year. It lets people search train times and download train timetables for when there’s no internet connection.

In April alone 2.1 million users used the application to find train times by iPhone. Other highlights were:

•    At the end of January 2010, 30 per cent of the total train timetable requests performed by thetrainline.com were undertaken on its iPhone application.
•    The app has been downloaded over 500,000 times with 45 per cent of users accessing the app for train times and information in April alone.
•    The app retained its position in the top five free travel apps for iPhone since its launch.

In a related deal, Masabi has signed a deal with thetrainline.com to privide an m-ticketing purchase and delivery system.

The solution will allow users to buy and display UK rail tickets using their mobiles. They don't need to visit ticket offices or ticket machines. A rollout is expected later in 2010.

Passengers can purchase tickets using a credit or debit card and then display the ticket including a secure barcode on the phone's screen or collect a conventional ticket at the train station.

Rail operators have already commenced the rollout of barcode scanners on trains and at rail stations, with several major routes expected to be fully covered by the end of this summer.
