Orange and NTT DOCOMO produce first 2D-to-3D smartphone

The Sharp Aquos phone will convert 2D content to 3D ‘at the touch of a button’.

The Android Gingerbread powered device will allow streamed content like Orange TV, videos and games to appear in 3D on the 4.2" Aquos LCD screen without the need for 3D glasses.

Users will also be able to create their own 3D content on the phone's 8mp camera, which has the ability to convert 2D content into 3D format instantly.

Yves Maitre, senior VP, mobile multimedia and devices, Orange, said: "Together, we share this ambition, launching this product in both Asia and Europe. We look forward to developing similar opportunities for our customers in the future."

This doesn't look to be the end of things either as Kiyohito Nagata, senior VP and MD of strategic marketing for NTT DOCOMO said: "DOCOMO will continue to work closely with Orange as part of a strategy to lead the global market with new and innovative products."

In keeping with what seems to be a standard feature in most mobiles now, content exports to social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube is possible as well as viewing the creations on compatible TVs and PCs.
