Pope Benedict XVI stands down after being forced to tweet the word of God.
The Vatican went digital in December, with the church revealing that Pope Benedict XVI was joining Twitter. Users were able to reach the leader of the Catholic faith via @pontifex, while directing spiritual debates to #AskPontifex.
Just two months later, however, and the Pope has announced his resignation, causing the internet to explode with questions pondering the truth behind his departure.
Pope Benedict, said: "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry."
The abdication comes following a bizarre tweet that was posted yesterday, saying: "We must trust in the mighty power of God’s mercy. We are all sinners, but His grace transforms us and makes us new."
Reading between the lines, it's possible the 'we' was directed at fellow Twitter users, and he's suggesting the micro-blog is a source of wickedness that's creating evil followers of darkness. Instagram may agree.
Meanwhile, prolific Twitter user Piers Morgan was among the many people in shock, tweeting: "As a Catholic, I'm not buying this. Popes don't just quit because they're tired. What's going on here??"
