Opera: youngsters prefer mobile to fixed web

Even when they have feature phones.

Browser firm Opera found 90 per cent of 18-27 year-olds in Nigeria, South Africa and Indonesia say they use their mobile phones more than desktop or laptop computers to access the Internet.

It added that the top handsets used by Opera Mini users in those countries were not smartphones – challenging the notion that smartphone uptake will be the major driver of mobile web usage globally.

In October 2010, Opera Mini had over 76.3 million users, a 7.1 per cent increase from September 2010.

Other key findings were:

* Almost 90 per cent of respondents in the US aged 18-27 have used their phones to share pictures.
* Respondents in China (84 per cent), Germany (84 per cent) and Vietnam (83 per cent) are most likely to have used SMS to ask someone out on a date.
* 53 per cent of respondents in the US and 57 per cent of respondents in China rarely or never read physical newspapers.
